Is Your Home at Risk For Termite Damage?

Eastern subterranean termites will search for food in a spider web pattern reaching 250 – 300 feet in every direction, this is about the length of a football field. Now once they find your home you have some time but not long. A full colony of termites (about 300,000 termites) will damage about 22 linear feet of 2x4s in one year. This is about 3 wall studs in your house a year. So in about 3-8 years you can be looking at serious structural damage. Termites are very common in Huntsville,  in fact, there are around 18-25 termite colonies in every acre. The main problem with termites is they show no sign until serious damage has already been caused. It does not matter if you have a crawlspace or a slab, termites will enter your home and cause damage. A Termite treatment is one of the best investments you can make here in the South.

Termite Inspection in Huntsville AL

Any time we are dealing with termites or just wanting to protect the house, an inspection must be done first. During our termite inspection we inspect every square inch of the house, including areas like the crawlspace, living rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, garage, attic, and any other portion of the house. Thoroughly inspecting the house will tell us whether you have termites but it will  also tell us details like what areas are at risk of infestation, was there previous termite damage, and where a termite treatment is necessary.

Our Termite Treatment Service

One of the smartest things you can do as a homeowner is have some form of termite treatment  for your home. We offer two termite treatment options:

Termite Bait Station Treatment

This termite treatment is very effective at protecting your home and eliminating termite colonies nearby. It is a common myth that termite bait stations will attract termites to the house, the bait stations do not attract termites at all. Termites will naturally forage about 100 yards away from their colony, the distance of a football field. They will forage in a spider web pattern in every direction covering every inch of ground looking for food. The bait stations are placed around the home so that when  termites from nearby colonies discover the bait, they carry it back to the colony, ultimately eliminating it at its source.

Liquid Termite Treatment

Liquid termite treatments are the best way to protect a house from termites. This treatment option is a lot more expensive compared to the bait station system but it is 100% effective when done correctly. The liquid treatment forms a barrier around your home that termites simply cannot cross. It does not kill termite colonies but it guarantees that termites will not enter your home.

How To Tell If You Have Termites

Because termites consume wood and most of the wood in your home is hidden behind your walls, it is often impossible to know if you have termites. Here are some of the most common signs to determine if you need a termite treatment.

Termite Swarmers

The most common sign that you have termites is when you see flying ants all over your home. These are termite swarmers, they appear when the colony has gotten to a certain size and they decide to swarm to create a new colony somewhere else. It is common for eastern subterranean termites to swarm after 3-7 years. So, If you are seeing termite swarmers then it is a sign you have had termites damaging your home for a long time.

Cracked Paint

This is often an overlooked sign of termites. Termites will chew through material until they get to the very end, then they will stop right before they break through. This will cause paint and drywall to crack or warp. Inspect your drywall and baseboards to see if the paint is starting to crack as this can mean you may have termites.

Mud Tubes

These are another common sign that you have termites. These are mud tubes that are about the size of a straw. These tubs can be on the sides of walls, coming down from the ceiling, or coming out of wooden structures. If you see these mud tubes it is a definite sign you need a termite treatment.

Termites in Huntsville AL

Eastern Subterranean Termites: 99% percent of the time Eastern Subterrain Termites are going to be the species of termite you find in your Huntsville home. They are the native species here in Alabama. They live in underground nests, in colonies of around 300,000 members. They eat cellulose from things like paper and wood. These termites will create mud tubes from their nest underground up to your home to find wood in your house. They then will take the wood they find and bring it back to the colony to feed. Eastern Subterranean termite colonies are made up of 3 groups: workers, soldiers, and reproductive termites. The workers make up around 90% of the colony, these are the termites that cause the damage to your home. Soldiers make up around 1-2%, their job is to protect the colony from threats. The reproductive termites consist of the king and queen. They are responsible for growing the colony as they constantly mate, giving birth to thousands of termites. Then there are also Swarmer termites known as alates. These reproductive termites look very similar to ants with wings, and are sometimes the first sign of a termite infestation. When the colony grows large or feels threatened, termite swarmers crawl out and fly away creating another colony elsewhere.
